How Does Invisalign Actually Work?

You probably already know the basic explanation of Invisalign: you wear a series of clear aligners that gradually move your teeth.

That’s true.

But it leaves out the most important part.

The aligners don’t decide where your teeth should go. Your orthodontist does.

At Redemption Orthodontics, Invisalign treatment starts long before your first aligner is manufactured. Dr. Michael and Dr. Taylor evaluate your teeth, your bite, your anatomy and what you’re hoping to change. Then they determine whether Invisalign is the right tool for your particular smile and design the movements needed to get there.

Redemption Orthodontics is a Diamond+ Invisalign Provider, which means our doctors have extensive experience treating patients with the Invisalign system.

We know experience matters because successful Invisalign treatment is about much more than handing someone a series of clear trays.

It’s about knowing how to plan the case, how to modify the plan when necessary, how to recognize when teeth aren’t moving as expected, and when another treatment option may give us a more predictable result.

Step 1: Your Free Invisalign Consultation

You may already come to your consultation knowing you want Invisalign. Awesome!

But you do not need to walk into Redemption already knowing whether you want Invisalign or braces. That’s part of what your free consultation is designed to help you figure out.

We’ll talk with you about what you’d like to change about your smile and obtain the records our doctor needs to evaluate your teeth and bite.

Then the doctor looks at the clinical side of the decision:

• Which teeth need to move?
• How does your bite fit together?
• What types of movements are required?
• Is Invisalign a predictable option for those movements?
• Would braces give us better control?
• Could either option work well?
• What treatment result are we ultimately trying to achieve?

We also want to know what you want.

If both Invisalign and braces are good clinical options, your preference and lifestyle can play a major role in deciding between them.

If our doctor strongly prefers or requires one option for a particular reason, we’ll explain that too.

Then, You’ll Sit Down With Your Treatment Coordinator

Your Treatment Coordinator, or TC, helps take the doctor’s clinical recommendation and turn it into a treatment plan you can actually understand and make a decision about.

Your TC can walk you through:

• What Invisalign will be like day to day
• The 22-hour wear requirement
• Attachments and elastics, if they may be needed
• Your estimated treatment time
• Your treatment fee
• Insurance benefits, when applicable
• Available discounts or savings
• Down-payment and monthly-payment options
• 0% interest in-house financing
• Other financing options when needed
• HSA/FSA options
• And whatever questions you have before deciding whether to start

We want you to leave knowing what we recommend, why we recommend it, what treatment will require from you, how long we expect it to take and what it will cost.

Step 2: We Digitally Scan Your Teeth

We use our Invisalign iTero Lumina intraoral scanner to create a detailed digital model of your teeth. This is the latest technology available, to deliver the best results possible.

A full-mouth scan can be completed in as little as 2 minutes.

And perhaps just as importantly: no goop, no gagging, no uncomfortable impression molds.

The scan captures the position and shape of your teeth and gives our doctors the digital information needed to begin planning your Invisalign treatment.

But the scan itself isn’t the treatment plan. That’s where the doctor’s work begins.

Step 3: Your Orthodontist Designs Your Invisalign Treatment

This is the part of Invisalign treatment most patients never see.

After your scan is submitted, Invisalign’s ClinCheck software creates a digital treatment setup. A ClinCheck is a 3D digital simulation and treatment-planning software that maps out the precise, step-by-step movement of your teeth from the beginning to the ideal end of your aligner treatment. Many times, there are a couple of ClinChecks required per case.

But we don’t view that initial computer-generated setup as a finished treatment plan like many other providers do.

Invisalign makes the aligners. Your orthodontist designs the treatment.

Our doctors review how the software proposes moving each tooth and make clinical modifications based on what they believe needs to happen for that individual patient, down to the 1/10th of a millimeter for each tooth. Usually, this means our doctors are working nights and weekends to ensure your smile transformation is moving forward and just right for you.

That can include changing things such as:

• Individual tooth positions
• The sequence in which teeth move
• Attachments
• Spacing
• IPR when appropriate
• Arch form
• Bite correction
• Elastics
• And other treatment mechanics

Invisalign’s own provider analytics even track ClinCheck modifications per case. Their data shows that the vast majority of other providers simply accept what the system designs without modifying anything for safety, efficacy, and biology.

Why does that matter?

Because there is a meaningful difference between simply accepting a proposed digital setup and using the Invisalign system as a tool to build a customized orthodontic treatment plan.

At Redemption, our doctors actively treatment-plan their Invisalign cases with modifications until it is just right, to ensure the best possible treatment outcomes for our patients.

The computer gives us powerful technology. The doctor provides the diagnosis, judgment and plan.

Why Does Invisalign Experience Matter?

Redemption Orthodontics is a Diamond+ Invisalign Provider, but we don’t think the designation matters simply because it gives us another logo to put on the website.

What matters is the experience behind it. As of September 2026, our doctors have actively completed over 15,000 ClinChecks and modifications.

Treating many Invisalign cases gives our doctors experience recognizing:

• Which movements tend to respond well to aligners
• Which movements may need to be programmed differently
• When particular attachments may help
• When elastics should be incorporated
• When a tooth isn’t tracking
• When additional aligners may be appropriate
• When a treatment plan needs to change
• And when Invisalign may no longer be the most predictable tool

Our modifications aren’t made just to make a digital treatment plan look different. They’re made because we’re trying to produce the movements we actually want in a real patient’s mouth.

That distinction becomes especially important when a case doesn’t behave exactly as the computer predicted.

What If I Started Invisalign Somewhere Else and I’m Not Happy With My Progress?

We sometimes meet patients who began Invisalign treatment elsewhere and come to Redemption because their teeth or bite aren’t finishing the way they expected.

We aren’t interested in criticizing the provider who started the case.

Orthodontics involves biology, and teeth don’t always move exactly as predicted.

Instead, we ask: where are we now, what still needs to be corrected, and what is the most predictable way to finish?

For a patient who is committed to completing treatment, our doctors can evaluate the current tooth positions and bite and determine what needs to change.

That might mean:

• A modified Invisalign treatment plan
• Different attachments
• Different staging or mechanics
• Elastics
• A new digital scan
• Refinement aligners
• Or sometimes transitioning to braces for greater control

We aren’t committed to finishing every Invisalign case with Invisalign. We’re committed to finding the most appropriate and predictable way to finish the patient’s smile.

Step 4: Your Custom Aligners Are Made

Once our doctors are satisfied with the treatment plan, Invisalign manufactures your customized series of aligners.

Each aligner is designed to create specific tooth movements as you progress through treatment.

You’ll receive instructions about when to change aligners, based on your individual treatment plan, from our experienced dental assistants when you come in to have your attachments placed and your initial set of aligners delivered.

We provide instructions, chewies, and a hook to assist with removal of your aligners.

There isn’t one universal tray-change schedule that’s right for every patient or every stage of treatment. We’ll tell you exactly how we want you to wear and change yours.

Step 5: Wear Your Invisalign 22 Hours Every Day

At Redemption Orthodontics, our Invisalign wear instruction is simple: 22 hours per day.

Not a range.

Your aligners generally come out to:

• Eat
• Drink anything other than water
• Brush
• Floss

Then they go back in.

This is one of the biggest differences between Invisalign and braces.

Invisalign gives you freedom because the appliance is removable. It also gives you responsibility because the appliance is removable.

According to Dr. Sebastian Paige, a dedicated orthodontist in Kingwood, TX, that low-profile, removable design is one of the biggest reasons active teens and adults choose clear trays in the first place, but it only pays off if you’re honest with yourself about keeping them in.

Your teeth can only respond to the forces programmed into the aligners while you’re actually wearing them.

Leaving them out for several extra hours every day can slow treatment and eventually cause your teeth to stop following the planned movements.

Will I Need Attachments With Invisalign?

Yes, almost all our Invisalign patients do.

Attachments are small, tooth-colored shapes bonded to certain teeth in a specific design.

They give the aligner something to grip so we can create particular types of movement more effectively.

Some patients may also need elastics with Invisalign to help correct their bite.

That’s worth knowing before treatment, because Invisalign isn’t always quite as simple as the advertisements make it look.

It’s still much less noticeable than traditional braces, but your treatment may involve more than a completely clear tray.

At your consultation and throughout treatment, we’ll explain what we expect your case to require.

Step 6: We Monitor Whether Your Teeth Are Actually Following the Plan

A beautiful digital simulation isn’t the goal. A beautiful result in your actual mouth is.

Throughout treatment, our team monitors how your teeth are responding to the aligners. One of the things we’re watching is whether your teeth are tracking.

What does “tracking” mean?

Tracking means your teeth are moving in a way that allows them to continue fitting properly into the aligners.

Sometimes one tooth doesn’t move exactly as anticipated. You might notice that the aligner isn’t sitting tightly against a particular tooth, or our team may spot the problem during a progress check.

We don’t want to blindly continue through tray after tray while that tooth gets farther away from the planned position. We want to figure out why.

It might be:

• Wear time
• An attachment issue
• A movement that needs more time
• A movement that needs to be restaged
• A need for different mechanics
• Or simply an individual biological response we couldn’t perfectly predict on a computer

Then we decide what needs to change. That’s part of orthodontic treatment.

What Happens If I Haven’t Been Wearing My Aligners 22 Hours?

Tell us. Really. Just like a teacher can tell when you didn’t do your homework, we can tell if you haven’t been wearing your aligners.

We’re much more interested in fixing the problem than pretending it isn’t happening.

If your teeth aren’t tracking because your aligners haven’t been worn consistently, we’ll talk about the best way forward.

Depending on the situation, that might involve:

• Improving your wear time
• Wearing a particular aligner longer
• Taking a new scan
• Creating a new series of aligners
• Modifying your treatment plan
• Or switching to braces if removable aligners simply aren’t working well for you

For some people, braces are actually easier because there’s nothing to remember to put back in.

We would rather recognize that early in your treatment, be transparent and have a discussion about it, and make a reasonable plan than turn Invisalign into a daily battle for the rest of your treatment with our office. Our goal is to deliver you the best experience, and the best way we can do that is by delivering timely and beautiful results, regardless of the modality.

Step 7: Refinements Help Us Fine-Tune Your Result

Here’s another thing we’d rather tell you before you start: your first series of Invisalign aligners may not be your last.

Sometimes patients hear the word “refinement” and assume something went wrong. Not necessarily.

When you complete a series of aligners, our doctors evaluate where your teeth and bite actually are. If additional movement would help us achieve the result we’re working toward, we may take another digital scan and order another series of aligners. That’s called a refinement.

For most Invisalign patients, refinements are simply part of fine-tuning the final result. The vast majority of our cases are complete after one refinement, with some needing a second. It is very uncommon for our patients to need three or more refinement rounds when aligners are being worn as instructed.

Think of it like golf: sometimes you sink the shot, and sometimes you’re very close but need one more putt to finish the hole. Refinements give us that extra opportunity to fine-tune your teeth and bite so we can finish as close to our goal as possible.

Most of our Invisalign treatment options include plenty of room for this normal fine-tuning. If your treatment ever requires something beyond what is included in your plan, we’ll talk with you about it first so there are no surprises.

Is Everyone a Candidate for Invisalign?

No. And we think it’s important to say that clearly.

Being a Diamond+ Invisalign provider doesn’t mean we believe everybody should be treated with Invisalign. It means we have substantial experience using Invisalign and selecting cases appropriately.

There are certain tooth movements and treatment situations where our doctors may believe braces give us more predictable control. Those can include cases involving:

• Significant upper front-tooth torque or angulation
• Major space closure
• Certain premolar extraction treatments
• Situations requiring especially precise root positioning
• Certain tooth-size and positioning concerns

For example, some patients have smaller upper lateral incisors, the teeth immediately beside the two upper front teeth. The exact positioning and spacing around those teeth can be especially important for the final appearance and finish of the smile. In certain cases, our doctors may prefer braces because they give us more predictable control of those positions.

What If My Treatment Requires Jaw Surgery?

If your orthodontic treatment requires jaw surgery, Invisalign is generally not our preferred treatment approach.

Surgical cases require a very high degree of coordination and immediate tooth positioning before and after surgery, and we typically prefer fixed appliances for that type of treatment, where we don’t need to wait for fabrication and delivery of a new set of aligners.

Choosing braces instead of Invisalign isn’t a failure of Invisalign. It’s simply choosing the tool we think is better suited to the job.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost at Redemption Orthodontics?

Our Invisalign treatment generally ranges from approximately $3,500 to $7,400.

Your individual fee depends on factors such as:

• The complexity and severity of your case
• How much tooth movement is required
• The Invisalign treatment package appropriate for your needs
• The anticipated duration of treatment

A more limited treatment will generally fall toward the lower end of the range. More comprehensive orthodontic treatment will generally fall toward the higher end.

Invisalign and braces are usually priced differently because Invisalign includes a separate laboratory and manufacturing component for your customized aligner system.

Your Treatment Coordinator will review your actual fee at your free consultation.

We also offer financial options that may include:

• 0% interest in-house financing
• No hard credit check for our in-house financing
• Flexible down-payment and monthly-payment options
• Third-party financing options
• Insurance benefit verification
• HSA/FSA payment options

We don’t want you leaving your consultation with a vague estimate and a stack of unanswered questions. We want you to understand the financial part of your treatment just as clearly as the clinical part.

Can I Start Invisalign the Same Day?

Yes. For patients who are ready to move forward, same-day starts may be available. That doesn’t mean you’ll leave the office wearing your first set of aligners that day.

A same-day start means we can finalize your treatment agreement and get the process underway so our doctor can begin working on your customized Invisalign ClinCheck prescription and treatment plan.

If you decide after your consultation that you’re ready to begin, we can often complete that step remotely so you don’t have to make another trip to the office just to get started.

Once your agreement is complete, our doctor begins reviewing and customizing your Invisalign plan. After that plan is finalized and your aligners are manufactured, your first trays are typically ready to be placed about 3 to 6 weeks later.

You never have to decide on the spot at your consultation. Whether you start that day or choose to move forward later from home, our goal is to make the process as comfortable and convenient as possible.

Can Invisalign Be Monitored Remotely?

Sometimes, yes.

If your Invisalign treatment is progressing well and your teeth are tracking as expected, some progress checks may be completed remotely. This can be especially helpful for busy patients or for someone who moves away during treatment.

Remote monitoring does not eliminate the need for in-person care, though.

There are still times when we need to see you in the office, particularly if we need to take a new digital scan for a refinement or additional series of aligners. After that scan, a separate in-person visit is typically needed to deliver the new aligners and make any necessary changes to attachments or treatment mechanics.

We can sometimes help patients continue treatment after relocating, but whenever possible, we recommend starting and finishing Invisalign treatment with our office. Keeping your treatment under the same doctor’s supervision from beginning to end gives us the best opportunity to monitor progress, make adjustments when needed, and finish your smile as predictably as possible.

What Happens When Invisalign Treatment Is Finished?

When your teeth and bite are where you and our doctors are happy, active orthodontic treatment is complete, but keeping your new smile in place is just as important as creating it.

Teeth naturally tend to shift over time, which is why retainers are an essential part of orthodontic treatment. Our philosophy is simple: nighttime for a lifetime. Wearing your retainers consistently at night is the best way to protect the result you worked hard to achieve.

For most treatment plans, at least one set of retainers is included at the end of treatment. We also usually offer opportunities to purchase additional sets of retainers, often with special savings available at the beginning and again near the end of treatment. Many patients like having a backup set on hand in case one is lost, damaged, or simply wears out over time.

Before you finish, our team will explain exactly how and when to wear your retainers, how to care for them, and what your replacement options are so you can protect your smile long-term.

The aligners are an important part of Invisalign. But they’re only one part.
